Total strangers would stand there with their coats on, watching us. The same’s those talk shows on television, it’s so easy to be honest with a big enough audience. You can say anything if enough people will listen.
Excerpt from Chuck Palaniuk’s “Invisible Monsters” Contrary to popular belief, life in the organ harvesting business is not all that exciting.
You spend a lot of your time waiting; I’m sure you can imagine as to what we wait for. Someone looking to sell, someone looking to buy... Death. Whichever comes first, we try not to be overly picky.
The market for organs is massive. Multi billion dollar really. So business isn’t as slow as I make it seem, but it is time consuming on the administrative end. There is a lot of back and forth, wheeling and dealing that goes on. None of which I am a part of. I simply deliver the news and make collections if need be.
On the rare occasion I’ll be sent out to discuss logistics of procurement with the living. Those meetings are quite unpredictable. Much research is done to ensure the safety for us and our clients, legally and health wise. However when you are dealing with someone who needs some cash quickly; they generally don’t do a whole lot of research on how this business works.
That's when it's possible for things to get mildly out of control.
We do try and stay away from addicts of any sort; business ethics and all. But occasionally one slips through the cracks and someone has to deal with them. Generally that someone is me... Or another individual of my same status in the company.
I’m sure you can see the moral dilemma in taking organs from someone who has been abusing their body, can you not? How can one, in good conscience, deliver a smoke addled lung to someone who has paid good money?
In the shadow economy there is no 1-800 to file a complaint.
I remember one incident specifically.
I was working in New York City a few years back. I want to say it was spring, but a part of me feels like it was summer - no matter.
I had a meeting with a potential client, one whom must have slipped through the cracks. We were meeting at Maxi’s - which is right in the heart of Times Square. I had arrived early, which is nothing out of the ordinary. I like to be on time and to be in control, no surprises. I had the file with me, I would review before his arrival and all would be well.
Most of the time new clients are on time, if not early. In matters such as this nerves are usually driving them crazy and they want to get it over with. Which is another reason being on time is important; you never want to have your guard down.
I have a personal rule of waiting no more than ten minutes for a client. Once that grace period has come and gone; they are on their own. It was drawing quite close for this case. If memory serves me correctly, he had just barely made it on time.
I saw him walk into the cafe and I knew that something was not right. The client did not fit the normal profile for whom we generally deal with. Against my better judgment I set my indiscretions aside and waited for him to notice me. They always do. Maybe it’s intuition but it always works out that way.
It took mere moments for him to see me tucked away in the back corner of the cafe. It was typical New York; loud, obnoxious, and everyone so involved with themselves. You could have planned a murder right in the middle of the place and no one would have paid any attention, but where I was seated seemed appropriate.
He was a younger gentlemen. His hair was unkempt, his clothes weren’t anything special, and he needed a good shave. I was used to more promising individuals, but we accommodate all types if they pass inspection - follow?
He walked towards me very confidently, it was as if he had been waiting for this his whole life.
Mister Donor, I asked. He nodded at me, I offered him the seat across from me and he accepted.
There was absolutely no hint of nervousness about him. I studied him for a moment and waited for the next move. I had only encountered a situation like this once before and only a couple times since - so at the time I was still unsure as how to handle what was happening.
The look he had in his eye told me he knew what he wanted and it wasn’t what I had in my paperwork.
New studies show that the pancreas is more important than originally thought, he told me. I was aware of this information; it wasn’t ground breaking - however at the time we didn’t deal in pancreas procurement.
Profit margin was too small.
He told me he was looking to rid of his pancreas as well as part of his liver, package deal. He’d even give us a break on the liver.
I did my best not to break form. I felt it was important to keep my stoic demeanor in order to maintain control of the situation. I wasn’t used to people demanding or offering deals. My first reaction was to get up and walk away. Act as if I had no clue as to what was going on.
This situation had set up written all over it.
I glared at the donor for just long enough and flatly replied “no.” I started gathering my papers and made it clear I was leaving. Mister Donor just watched for a minute, not overly shocked - as if he had this happen before. Which is possible, there is competition in the market but everyone knows we are the best and that is because we don’t deal with donors of this sort.
He must have thought I was bluffing. As soon as I started walking away he shot up from his seat and began following closely behind me. He was telling me how great of a deal it was. Pancreas donations are going to skyrocket over the next couple months, this that and the other thing. Unfortunately for him, he was barking up the wrong tree. I didn’t have anything to do with what we sold, I just closed the deals.
This guy had a lot of gusto, easily the most aggressive donor I had dealt with. He followed me right out of the cafe and down the street. His confidence melted into desperation with each step we took - insisting we were passing up on the deal of a life time.
We had to have traveled three blocks by this point. Still right on my heals trying to convince me otherwise. I explained as matter-of-factly as I could that just the liver was the deal, but that wasn’t good enough. He needed more money. Money money money. That’s all I kept hearing everytime he opened his mouth.
I was slowly realizing that the donor was a seller.
Excuse the jargon.
The difference between a donor and a seller is pretty simple. A seller will sell everything he can to to make money. Whether it’s to feed an addiction or simply because he doesn’t want to work. He will sell every organ he can until he has nothing left, which is no good. We don’t deal with those kind, but this guy slipped right on through.
He was getting progressively louder as we continued on our path to nowhere. I had to take some sort of action. We were in the middle of Times Square and he probably seemed like a crazy person yelling about selling his organs. Sure, it’s New York - but eventually someone is going to notice.
First chance I had, I spun around quickly and pulled him down a side street. It was less crowded and slightly quieter. At first I didn’t realize how hard I pulled him, but I tore part of his tshirt. It was older and he needed a new one anyway so I may have done him a favor; I digress.
This is where I realize how committed the seller was.
Through his torn shirt I noticed surgical scars. Not just a couple small laparoscopic incisions; it looked as if he had visited multiple back ally surgeons over the course of his life. My curiosity took over and I had to investigate further. I pulled his shirt up higher to see the extent of his situation.
From what I could gather - it looked as if one kidney, a lung, and a part of his liver was already gone. Possibly some intestine as well. His upper torso was quite comparable to a jigsaw puzzle.
The seller was yelling at me the entire time I was inspecting him, but I paid him no attention. Most likely he was just trying to get me off him. I had a clear size advantage and he wasn’t going anywhere. Although I don’t really recall him struggling all that much.
That was a man who had taken advantage of our business. He was selling himself to death. Sooner or later, he’d have no organs left to live on - chances are this has already happen. The less reliable companies don’t care what you have to offer or the quality of it. They will take what they can get at either parties expense.
You’re finished I told him, I was looking him right in the eye - desperation was setting in. I gripped tighter and pushed him into the wall. He put up his hands the way people do as a defense mechanism when they are pressed, at this point, I backed off.
He sighed and I backed away dusting myself off. I told him we don’t deal with his kind and cut him off every time he tried to defend himself, it was feeble attempts at this point. He wasn’t trying at all and I just wanted to be done with the situation. I was too green to deal with this shit.
I’ve learned a lot since then. Had my fair share of encounters with sellers too. It’s not as few and far between as some people would have you believe.
People will do anything to make a quick buck.
I suppose it’s no real different then what we do in TGW. Let us be honest, we sell our bodies to make money. We put our bodies, our minds, our lives, our families, everything - all of it right on the line weekly for a paycheck.
What makes us any different from a seller?
Professional wrestlers. Entertainers. The next step up from jugglers and magicians!
We’re not any better, just going about our business in a different way. A relatively safer way but same concept none the less. Every time we step into that ring, we’re destroying a piece of ourselves. Which part of your body is up to you and your opponent.
As wrestlers we could never sell an organ.
It’s hard breaking out of the frame of mind that you are put in when working a job for so long. All day I just think about what I’m used to. How it is “usually” done. I never consider that things are different everywhere you go. I try and find the similarities between my two chosen paths and realistically - there is zero.
Any link I can muster up is good enough to bring forth some sort of comfortability but I’m just fooling myself - no doubt about it. I learned this the hard way in my debut at TGW. I came close but close is not something I do. I either do it or I do not. Very star wars-esque, I know but it’s the routine you become accustom to.
That powers that be have given me a second chance. That whole notion of untapped potential. I generally don’t fall for it, it’s just business to them. They need to fill a card and they think putting me against R. Franchise is the way to go about it.
I can’t say I blame them. With the current state of this place, they need to put the producers in a spot to actually keep the people from leaving half way through an event.
I’m no slouch. It’s not like I know absolutely nothing. You don’t earn an MBA by not paying attention. The tactics the bosses use are common across all grounds of entertainment. When it comes down to it, myself and Franchise are the real stars of the show. The people in the middle are the ones that build up for the supposed climax.
When it comes to that point though, the viewers are generally worn out - tired - wanting to go home. We are the ones they are paying attention to, not the supposed stars.
I would assume that nearly everyone, if not everyone, in this business understands this concept. How could you not? With all the books, publications, twitter, people have all sorts of access. This information gets around.
In the end, all it does is tell me that I have a job to do and I need to do it well.
Working and and accomplishing.
Two things I know I can do.

With the help of Rob the new Cameraman, Franchise assembles a new set to do his weekly trash-talkin', complete with green screen, graphics, and all the bells and whistles you could ever want! But Franchise knows how to bring the fire to any interview set!
Franchise: As you can see, I'm just having a hell of a good time on this new set! My boy, Rob, hooked me up with all this stuff! Now, I'm presented in full High Definition, crystal clear picture with a 5.1 surround sound package! Right now, I'm better than the whole production value of the Animosity! But I digress!
We're just one day away from the first PPV in months for the company! NO LIMITS is finally here! And I'm happy to say that I'm proud that I'm still here to wrestle for a great promotion like TGW!
However, I got to deal with Alli Taylor! Look, ever since Wade gave Alli the keys to the kingdom, Alli has been running this company to the ground! When Wade was running it, he gave opportunities to only the most willing! He knew that the talent he put up was nothing but top tier talent! When you were put into a Championship match, you knew you deserved it!
But Alli Taylor, she's completely ruining it! You're giving title shots to people who been here for 2 weeks? This is some BULLSHIT! Look, I'm the TRUE CONSTANT in TGW! Right now, I feel that I should be in the main event for the TGW Championship Belt! However, I'm not in the match that the TGW wants me to be! No, Alli has me stuck in the mid-level match! I gotta say, this is bush league! I don't know what Alli has against me! She sees that the TGW fan base is nothing but members of the Franchise Nation! One Nation UNDER THE TAG!
But the fact is, she puts me in a match with Alistair Ambrosia! Now, he's a good wrestler! But, I don't know where to place him at! I mean....I guess...he doesn't do anything to me!
Look, I know I get a lot of bad press because I trash talk and that makes people think that my ego is overly inflated! But I love to trash talk. I like to get all that bad blood out there! We have to get the hate and shit out there so we can fully lay it down in the ring when we get to the business at hand! I'll tell you guys, the best matches I've ever had were when the opponents I were facing were talking shit back to me! It gets me motivated! AJ Adams, I might hate his ass, but he knows how to trash talk! Lady Ja Gi Moon, yeah, I'm going old school, he knew how to push my buttons! Trash talking gets me pumped up, gets the crowd pumped up and hell, it makes anything better! Next time, trash talk before sex! It will work wonders for you guys!
But when I go to Alistair, I don't get that! I get a full 20 minute monologue about his life, comparing wrestling to everyday life, and giving out his point of view on things! And then, if he had the time, he'll probably open it up for a question and answer period where anybody can ask him questions! Well, I got a question for you sir: Are you ready for THE 'A' GAME!?
Alistair, let's get down to business! Ever since you came here, you've made a splash, but you need to make a Tsunami if you want to be noticed here! You want to climb to the top, you're going to have to make a few enemies! And if you want to be the best, you're going to have to fight one of the best! Enter you're truly!
Let's face it, you're not ready for the next step! If you were, you would step up your game! You're not ready to deal with my swagger, you not ready to deal with the pain you're about to go through, Ambrosia!
This match is going to take one of us to the next level, to a possible title shot! If you're not going to take this shit serious, there's the door! I'll see you later! But I'm here to win championships! And at NO LIMITS, I'm starting my campaign to win championships with you!
Alistair, you better beat me before I TAG you sir! I promise you, I'm going to put you though my own basic training course! If you're not ready for the pain, you'll just end up another victim to the A Game!
And I want to sent out a message to anyone who wins either the Volitionary or TGW Championships! I don't care what title Alli Taylor wants me to go for, I promise you, I'm giving you 110 percent in that ring! If you win the Volitionary Championship, remember, I held the title for the longest time than anybody else before! I know how to win that title and I know how to defend that title! If you win the TGW championship, i'm just one TAG away from being the first wrestler to hold both TGW and Volititionary Championship! So be on your guard, because I'm coming for what's mine!
Alistair, all I got to say is clear: YOU BRING THE PAIN...and I'll bring...THE 'A' GAME!!!!!

To climb steep hills requires a slow pace at first.
Quoted from William Shakespeare Getting caught up in the least likely of scenarios happens to everyone eventually; some more than others. It would be quite difficult to go through life not having anything happen that is completely out of the ordinary for you. It could be anything. It doesn’t have to be something dangerous, exciting, thrill seeking. All it has to include is an event that would not usually happen in the course of your normal everyday life.
There are a couple of professions that I can think of where this happens quite often - I would assume that they just become the norm. We come to expect the unexpected; therefore it is only unexpected to those on the outside.
Follow?
Not only do these situations arise in our professional careers, but in our lives as well. We are exposed to people from every walk of life that you can imagine. We are bound to meet interesting, dangerous, boring individuals who will, I assure you, enrich our lives one way or another.
Every experience taps into who we are as people. It makes us bolder, stronger, more thoughtful, all depending on the event itself. We have to embrace these situations though, we cannot just let them pass us bye. Without the full embrace of whatever it may be, we will end up stagnant and not experience our full growth and potential.
I reached my capacity in my former career. That is why I moved on. I needed more, I need to experience a new side of things. I wanted to be on the side of decisions rather than information. I now have limitless opportunity to take advantage of that.
See what I did there?
I go into battle at No Limits against Russell Franchise. One of the first people I ever stepped into a ring with, that alone makes him someone I will always remember. Whether that is in his benefit or not is beyond me.
I’d be lying if I said I had any real issue with the man, because I don’t. I’ve been doing this for two weeks, how could I? I don’t know him as a person, it’d be ridiculous to pass judgement. I do however, have a job that must be done. I simply cannot sit back and be walked all over. It happened in my debut, inches from victory yet it was ripped away.
The ladder match was a learning experience and there is still much to learn. Determination and focus are all I have going for me compared to Mister Franchise. From what I’ve come to understand, he has been around the block as they say.
I may not believe in underdogs but I do believe in comparative advantage.
We can’t all be great at everything. It simply doesn’t work like that. No matter how hard we try, we just cannot be great at everything we do. We find out niche and we stick to it. This is what I have done. I’ve found ways of doing what I need to do but staying within my realm of realism - something that is clearly beyond certain coworkers of mine.
Becoming a part of an organization such as TGW has forced me to go about things different then I normally would. Usually I’m not nearly as public as I am now nor am I as open about decisions I have made in my life. But this is the entertainment industry and within the guidelines which are set for us - we must entertain. For sure not everyone will be nearly as interested in certain aspects of what I have to say as others, but that is not for my coworkers to decide, luckily.
You see, Russell Franchise and myself have two completely opposite ways of going about our business.
I construct a story for everyone. I lead them down a path of uncertainty and I do this to make a point. One which Russell has clearly missed. I do this to not bore them with the usual meandering that they are used to when it comes to this business. Instead of telling them how bad I’m going to beat my opponent or how title worthy I am, I lead them to questions and answers. I relate it to other experiences I have encountered and make the connection.
Anyone can pull the trigger.
Not everyone can shoot.

Franchise: Ambrosia talks about being able to construct a story, to bring the average person along for the story to know were you've come from and how you gotten to this point in time or history! So, to honor what Alistair has said, I would like to construct the story about how I've gotten to this point with a match between Alistair!
Last year, I got this phone call! I didn't know who it was! He asked me if I would want to join a wrestling federation in the city of San Diego! He said that I would be able to achieve things I could never do before! That man, was Wade Mason! And I gotta tell you all, he was a man of his word!
Wade Mason, I look up to him as possibly the greatest promoters in the world! He gave me a shot to perfect my wrestling abilities to once again entertain the legion of wrestling fans in the TGW! And I had a great time! I went undefeated for nearly 2 months and then, my biggest accomplishment, becoming the first Volitionary Champion in the company! And I was clearly on Cloud Nine! I thought that nothing could bring me down! And then AJ Adams happened!
AJ Adams was mad of the praise I got from Wade and the others in the back! But most importantly, he hated that he lost his TGW Title and that I still had my title! So, what is a desperate man to do? He poisons my water and causes me to fail a drug test, which immediately strips me of my title, the title I worked so damn hard for!
So, in anger that Wade, the man I thought would always have my back, would do something like that! I walked away...I walked away from the thing that I loved so much! It literally ate at me in my heart, that I was so angry about losing my title without EVER being beaten for it!
A couple of months later, I get a call on the TV! It's the very man who cost me everything, AJ Adams! He says if I am who I think I am, I will come down and try to get my title back! After a week of asking myself what I wanted, I knew I wanted my title back!
So I came back and I fought like hell to get even close to the top of the Volitionary Title race! But when I felt I was on top and close to getting my title again, TGW went away!
Money issues, maybe bad scheduling, it left me mad! Twice, I was removed from the thing I loved! Last time, it was voluntary! This time, it just happened! I thought I could just walk way for the final time!
But then, Wade comes to me! He says, "Franchise, TGW needs you! We need you to be the face of the company once again!" I was moments from saying 'No'! But I knew that my heart would always be in TGW! And now, I'm standing here and I know that at NO LIMITS, I will be facing you, Alistair Ambrosia, to get to the next level.
Ambrosia, our match will live up to the name, NO LIMITS! We will give the TGW World a match of the ages! A new up and comer against the ONLY CONSTANT in TGW! But, Alistair, I need you to get ready for me! You're going to dedicate a new chapter in your book of stories to the night you drew the short straw and you got me! I promise you, I'll give you a story you couldn't even make up even if you tried hard! I'm going to make you feel the pain all match long! No pauses, no time outs! Just straight domination from the word GO!
Ambrosia, Let's Finish The DAMN THING! At No Limits, let's make history!!!!
