Aaron Rupp Journal Entry Saturday, August 21, 2010
History has always played a big part in wrestling, even though most people refuse to believe that. History gives us something to learn from in order to forge our own paths towards the future while also picking up valuable information to prevent ourselves from repeating past mistakes. It is often said: “Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” It is a philosophy that so very few believe in, which is sad considering that it is those same people who always make the same mistakes over and over again.
I've constantly strived to be someone who learns from his mistakes in order to not repeat them. And ever since the last Animosity, I've practically been cramming my brain with information from the past in my attempt to make as few mistakes as possible when TGW's No Limits pay-per-view comes around. After all, I have a golden opportunity in front of me, and I'd love nothing more than to take full advantage of it.
I have the opportunity to main event No Limits against Natalie Burrows, a competitor I have nothing but the utmost respect for, to determine a new TGW Champion. And in an attempt to ensure that there will be a winner, the match will be taking place inside one of the most ruthless and unforgiving structures ever conceived... the Hell in a Cell. I know from my research that Natalie has never taken part in a match like this. And while I've battled in various different kinds of cage matches over the years, not once have I ever set foot inside the Hell in a Cell. This will be a new experience for both of us, and hopefully it won't be as violent as Hell in a Cell matches tend to get. I don't have any reason to cause serious harm to Natalie, and I have far too much respect for her to simply make things brutal in order to get the gold.
This match is almost like a trip down memory lane for me. Natalie is in the same position I was in near the beginning of my career. Almost a full year of experience under her belt, and she's getting a shot at TGW's top title. However, she's also not exactly on the good side of the boss, Alli Taylor. I have no doubt that Alli may not enjoy the thought of someone that doesn't like her being the TGW Champion, and she may try to find a way to ruin Natalie's chances of winning this match, much as my own chances were ruined because of outside interference so very long ago. Considering that winning the TGW Title that way would go against everything I stand for and make me seem like a hypocrite if I allow it to happen, I can only hope that Alli Taylor is smart enough to just let this match play out so a champion can be crowned when Natalie and I find out who is the better competitor at No Limits. Otherwise, I'm sure she'll have some explaining to do to the board of directors as to why the TGW Championship is still vacant, because I refuse to let a title be handed to me just because the boss has a vendetta.
I'm really looking forward to facing Natalie at No Limits, and it's going to be a great match regardless of the outcome. Natalie is that rare breed of competitor who is kind-hearted and respectful, but still very talented and more than capable of getting the job done. It'll e an honor to face her, and I will have no shame in losing to her if it is her hand raised in victory at the end and not mine. I wish Natalie nothing but the best of luck, and also advice her to bring her very best to the Cell. After all... she can expect nothing less from me. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “This… this is how things should be…”The scene opens to find Aaron Rupp standing at the end of his street with his back to the camera, his emerald eyes gazing out at the calm waters of Lake Erie. He’s dressed in blue jean shorts and a grey tanktop with “USA” on the front in dark blue letters next to an American flag. Aaron has his arms folded behind his back as he stares calmly out over the lake. With a small smile, he begins to speak.“This is the way things should look for TGW. Standing at the very top of the mountain are two competitors who know exactly what this business is all about. Fairness, respect, competition… that is all you’ll find when you look at the two souls who have overcome all others to get to this point. This is what TGW needs… this is what all those fans deserve to have… all I can say is that I am honored to be one of those two individuals at the very top, having given the fans of True Glory Wrestling the honorable competition they deserve to see when they come to attend the shows or tune in to watch us on TV. They don’t want to see narcissists talking about how great they are or scumbags using every dirty trick in the book to steal a win away from a more deserving competitor. They want to see wrestlers like Natalie Burrows and myself, wrestlers who fight fairly and with nothing but respect who put it all on the line every single match to give those fans the best show possible.
I am proud to say that after No Limits comes to an end, the TGW Championship will be around the waist of a competitor who will not only have earned it, but will also treat that belt with the proper respect that it deserves. The only question left is an obvious one…
Who will be the champion?”Aaron slowly turns to face the camera now, unfolding his arms and letting them rest at his sides.“Natalie, let me start by saying that it will be both an honor and a pleasure for me to get the opportunity to compete against you, especially with the biggest prize this company has to offer going to the winner. You can believe me when I say that this is definitely an opportunity you deserve. I’ve seen what you can do in the ring in a few other companies that we’ve both been in, but I’m not going to go into detail on that. After all, we’re here to talk about TGW, and how you currently stand at 4-0 here after beating quite a few big names in this company to get yourself to where you are now. To call that an accomplishment would be an insult, because being on the kind of undefeated streak you’re on right now is far more than just a simple accomplishment. After all, you’re a young woman who’s gone through hardships growing up and most people see having to constantly face men as a disadvantage for you in every single match. But you’ve proved the critics wrong time and time again, and you’ve done it all while holding true to being a respectful athlete and fighting for the fans and not simply for yourself. I can’t help but admire you for that. Overcoming the likes of Chris Maddox, AJ Adams, ‘Jester’ Chad Allen, and Kaji Fireson is no easy feat, and yet you can stand there and say with a straight face that you’ve done just that.
I know I’m praising you pretty heavily right now, but you deserve it for where you are now. But that said, know that I’m not going to make this easy for you. I know I’ve only had two matches here and won both of them, but in those two matches I’ve had to go through six different wrestlers to meet you here. I’ve pinned AJ Adams just as you have, and I’m more than familiar with Kaji if you’ve kept an eye on my career at all. Saying that one of us has more momentum than the other is just a matter of opinion, but I will say that I’m not looking to just let my own streak stop at two. I know the idea of you being underestimated because you’re a woman is a subject you don’t like, so you can be happy knowing that I’m not one of those kinds of people. I don’t care if you’re male or female, how big or small you are, or how strong or fast you are… as long as you’re standing across the ring from me, you’re going to get my very best and maybe even a little more each and every time. One of us is going to fall at No Limits Natalie, and I want this win and the TGW Title just as much as you do. After all, every wrestler dreams of being able to say that they’ve been the top champion of a company at least once, right?”Aaron’s voice kind of rises a bit as he finishes that sentence. He sighs and lowers his head, making it clear that something’s on his mind and it’s bugging him. He closes his eyes and bites his bottom lip before continuing without looking at the camera.“It is true that neither of us have been a top champion before. But that said, there’s one small difference between us Natalie. This is the first chance you’ll have ever had to try and earn that honor. For me, this will be the second time, and I remember my first opportunity all too clearly. It was a match where I went in as the underdog, having barely one full year of wrestling experience under my belt and only having gotten the shot because I had spoken out against the owner and she had wanted to punish me by giving me a huge opportunity just so her world champion could destroy my hopes and dreams along with my body. I worked my ass off on that night and surprised everyone with how well I did. By all accounts, it was a match I should’ve won despite all the odds being against me. But in the end, I couldn’t get the win. It wasn’t because I made a rookie mistake that ultimately cost me, or because I got too overconfident in the end. No… it was because the boss became so fearful that her champion was about to be upset that she sent out one of her lackeys to interfere, which ultimately led to my downfall. It is something that has haunted me to this day… that nagging question of ‘What if?’ that still plagues my mind every time I think back to that night, now more than ever since I have a similar opportunity before me.”Aaron pauses for a moment to take a deep breath before he opens his eyes for the camera again.“Natalie, I bet you’re wondering… ‘Why did he just tell me all that?’ There are two reasons actually, and the first one should be pretty obvious. Now you know that there was once a time when I came so very close to being able to say that, at one point, I stood at the very top of the mountain, and I’m not too thrilled about the possibility of history repeating itself here. I’ve managed to get myself this opportunity, and I’ll be damned if I let it slip through my fingers like it did all those years ago. This is my chance to truly prove to everyone, especially myself, that I do have what it takes to be the proverbial king of the mountain. This is the opportunity I’ve been looking forward to for about four years now, and I’m ready to fight to the very end to be the one whose hand is raised when all is set and done.
However, the second reason gives us a look at the flip side of that coin. Having been in this situation before, I’m not going to lie Natalie… looking at this match, I see far too many similarities between your present situation and what I went through about four years ago. You’re a few months away from being in this business for one full year, and now you’ve gotten yourself a shot at the top title despite that small amount of experience. You’re not exactly on the good side of the boss right now, just because you disagree with Alli Taylor and refused to give up your morals to do her dirty work. And you’re going up against an opponent who is far more experienced than you. Those three factors create too much of a parallel between this match and my only other shot at a company’s top title for my liking. Natalie, I’d really hate to have to do to you the same thing that happened to me, and that’s deny you the right to call yourself the top competitor in TGW despite the fact that this is your first chance to be able to call yourself that and you earned it so early in your career. But I know that you wouldn’t appreciate me taking it easy on you just because I wouldn’t want you to go through what I did, and I doubt I could forgive myself if I gave you anything less than my best. Still… I’ll be honest in saying that I’m worried for you Natalie. I’m worried about the possibility that Miss Taylor will make an attempt to try and have someone under her influence try to interfere in this match to prevent you from winning the TGW Title, just as it happened to me years ago. If I do win this match, I don’t want to win that way, and I don’t want you to think that after all the respect I’ve showed you so far that I’d sell my soul to the devil just to call myself a champion. And sadly, I’ve been in enough matches involving some kind of cage to know that the cell won’t always do its job of keeping people that don’t belong out.”Aaron sighs again, trying to maintain his composure.“Natalie, you have my word that should Alli Taylor try to tamper with this match in any way to put you at a disadvantage, I will not capitalize on it and use it to become the TGW Champion. If Alli has a problem with it, then she’s just going to have to accept the fact that no matter who wins this match, her top champion will be someone that doesn’t agree with her methods. I know I’m just throwing myself into the fire here by saying this, but I’m not going to see you be denied a golden opportunity just because you’re on the boss’s bad side, and I refuse to have a tainted title win as part of my record. I have far too much respect for you to see that happen.”Aaron’s smile slowly returns to his lips as he takes a deep breath again, feeling much better now.“This is your biggest test to date Natalie. I’m not discrediting the names you’ve beaten up to this point, but you should know by now where I stand regarding this business and what’s happening to it. As far as I’m concerned, this is more than a simple test to see if you’re skilled enough to be able to call yourself the TGW Champion. I’ll also be testing to see if you can be a respectable champion should you defeat me. I’m not doubting your kind heart Natalie, but I’ve seen championship gold change people for the worse, and I’ll admit to falling into that trap myself in the past. Prove to me that you have what it takes to be a TGW Champion I can proudly compete against, win or lose. Otherwise… you’ll just have to accept that No Limits is not your night yet.”Fade to black.

After the last Animosity went off the air... Even though she hadn't been booked, Natalie Burrows had made a point of being present backstage. Why wouldn't she? Despite the fact that her boss was none too fond of her on a personal level, the Southern Belle knew that she couldn't take away the title shot that she had worked so hard to earn… and so she had wanted to watch the matches firsthand, scope out the competition to the best of her ability. While she knew full well that one could only learn so much from observation, she also knew that any insight she could gain would be valuable… so she kept a low profile, letting all of her potential opponents shine out of respect for what they were capable of. There was no need for her to pull the spotlight onto herself when she would have her time to shine, after all, something that was all but guaranteed when she was announced as one of the competitors to have a shot at the TGW Championship. Keeping her thoughts to herself, the Southern Belle is dressed simply in a pair of khaki dress slacks and a coral-colored silk dress blouse with a high collar and short sleeves, blond curls partially pulled back by a barrette as she makes the attempt to leave as quietly as she arrived. It is just as she is about to leave the arena that she finds herself being approached by none other than Alli Taylor herself. The acting general manager has her arms crossed over her chest as she walks up to Natalie, a bit of a smirk tugging at her lips.Well well well, look at what we have here… Little Miss Goodie Two-Shoes. I'm surprised you showed up, Natalie. The Southern Belle's eyebrow quirks slightly as she serenely regards her boss, her hands clasping loosely behind her back. Why wouldn't I, Miss Taylor?Oh, no reason… I just thought that you'd be too busy spreading your legs for my leftovers to bother attending, is all.Alli's smirk widens as she watches Natalie sigh and shake her head, knowing full well that she has struck a nerve. It fades a little, though, when the Southern Belle keeps her composure. You can assume whatever you like about my personal life, Miss Taylor, but who I am seeing does not factor into how I conduct myself professionally. That is a lesson that you could certainly use a reminder of, considering how you have been acting as of late.Miss Taylor's arrogant expression falls to shatter at her feet in the face of Natalie's firm refusal to not be polite, her frustration at the woman she has come to loathe overtaking her features. And how, exactly, do you know anything about how I should be doing my job? The last I checked, you were hired to do what I told you to.Now that catty little comment gets a more visible reaction, Natalie's blue eyes narrowing subtly in what passes for a glare for the Southern Belle as she responds, her polite tone going from slightly cool to positively frigid.Except for how I wasn't, Miss Taylor. I was hired to go out into that ring and perform, not to do your nor anyone else's dirty work… but more importantly, in this case, I was hired to conduct myself in a professional manner. While I may not have your management experience, that does not mean that I am blind to how you have been attempting to manipulate this entire roster to follow your every whim. It's a shame--Unsurprisingly, Alli doesn't take too kindly to Natalie calling her on her antics. The general manager gets right up in the Southern Belle's face to the best of her ability, her voice rising as she is the first to truly crack. No, you know what is a shame? That I have to give you a shot at the top title in this company when I don’t think you deserve it. I don't care how many matches you've won, you little blond bitch - if it were up to me, you'd be jerking that curtain each and every show. And after Aaron's kicked your ass right off of that high horse of yours? You had best believe that you won't be seeing another title opportunity for a long, long time. The threats are more than cause enough for Natalie's face to become seriousThen it's a good thing that I have no intentions of losing, Miss Taylor… although even if I do, I am not too concerned about what you will do to me.Alli can't help but chuckle mockingly, a cruel smile tugging at her lips.Oh? And why is that? The slight smile that tugs at Natalie's lips is free of malice or loathing; instead, it is a return to her usual serenity and calm demeanor.Because I know, just as well as you do, that your time in your position will be very limited indeed should you keep on the path that you are on. It has become painfully obvious that you are incapable of doing your job in the fair and professional manner that you should be… and I know that I am not the only one that feels that way. Make all of the threats that you want, Miss Taylor - soon enough, I suspect that you will no longer be in a position to enforce them.Alli sputters indignantly as Natalie indulges in a bit of a chuckle at the manager's expense. What she says as she puts an end to the conversation could even constitute as a catty remark if it wasn't for the entirely neutral, casual way that she says it. There are times that the truth is all one needs to make a point… and this was definitely one of them.Oh, and Miss Taylor? I'm sure that Gabe would be amused to hear that he is your leftovers… when it was he that left you. Now if you'll excuse me...Not waiting for a response, the Southern Belle walks out of the scene, knowing full well that the gesture would say more about how she doesn't respect Miss Taylor more than any words ever possibly could. The slighted manager glares daggers at her departing back as the scene fades to black, Alli clearly struggling to keep herself from attacking Natalie from behind as she departs.-------------------------------------------------- So we meet again, Mister Rupp… Roughly five days have passed between Natalie's confrontation with Alli Taylor and the scene that the camera fades back in on, enough time for the Southern Belle to return to her home in North Carolina to prepare for what will be the biggest match of her career. This was an opportunity that she would be a fool to pass up… and her opponent would be someone that she needed to take seriously despite how he had only had two matches with the company. It is in her back yard that we find the Southern Belle, the blond taking a break from training to tend to her garden. Everything but the lone pumpkin vine she had planted is on the verge of being ready to harvest, cucumbers and tomatoes and bell peppers of all three colors being left to ripen on the vine instead of on the counter in her kitchen. The wait would be well worth it, she knows… and so she is patient with them, plucking weeds with an ease born of practice. Dressed in the same denim cut-offs as always, a coral-colored bikini top that is more modest than the vast majority of what is on the market leaving enough skin exposed to benefit from the breeze. Blond curls pulled up into a ponytail, Natalie wipes her hands off on her shorts before she straightens, her gaze gravitating right to the camera's lens. A nod of greeting and she gets right to business, her tone cordial. Now I know that you and I have never been in the ring together, but that does not mean that I am not familiar with you and what you are capable of. As a matter of fact, I dare say that you are the competitor that I am the most familiar with in TGW, what with how I first got my start in this business and all in a promotion you have worked for for years. It seems that familiarity is not a two-way street, however, since if it were? I imagine that you would be more concerned with overcoming me than trying to overcome past demons. Not that I can blame you for wanting to redeem yourself, for wanting to be able to properly capitalize on a title opportunity like this without the specter of interference looming over your shoulder… but that doesn't change the fact that I, too, have experienced the bitter taste of having an important victory ripped out of my grasp by unfair means. Simply because a title wasn't at stake doesn't mean that it stung any less, something that I am sure you can attest to. Heck, I think it is safe to say that no one likes that feeling… so while I am admittedly relieved that you are willing to play by the rules, that does not by any means translate into a victory for you come No Limits. If anything, it means that I will be pushing myself even further since the last thing I want is to regret not giving everything I have to give - and when I pour each and every drop of my soul into this business, I find success. My heart and determination has helped me overcome experience, overcome size and skill and gender… and, most importantly for our match on Tuesday, it has helped me overcome elements of the extreme that many have thought me too soft to cope with. The majority of the world had forgotten just how strong a steel magnolia like myself can be beneath the softness of her words and the kindness of her smile… but I have made darn sure to help them remember that fact time and time again.A faint smile tugs at her lips at the memories of proving that particular assumption wrong. There is one, however, that sticks out… and so she decides to share it to help illustrate her point.I'm not sure if you remember it or not, Mister Rupp, but my very first match in this business on a professional level was a baptism of fire amidst barbed wire and unforgiving steel. Even if there was no ceiling overhead or fencing surrounding me, I was forced to dig deeper than even I thought I could in order to emerge victorious - and when I did, not only did I eliminate half of the field of nine by myself, but I did it without so much as picking up a single blessed weapon. If I am capable of overcoming the numbers game in a match where there were many others gunning to not only defeat me, but end my career even before it could begin… then I think - no, I know - that I can survive a one-on-one match inside of a H-e-double-hockey-sticks in a Cell match. Heck, I can do more than survive there… I can succeed. You see, Mister Rupp, it is when the odds are stacked against me that I thrive. I feed off of the pressure and the challenge, turning the doubters words and wishes into a fuel that is made all the more potent by my desire to make a name for myself in this business - and to do it the right way. The blond nods to affirm that point before she continues, her competitive spirit burning brighter in her eyes than ever before. Considering the final obstacle that stood between her and realizing her championship dreams, it is no real surprise that it is.I cannot help but wonder, though, just how it is that you have the right to declare yourself as the savior of this company when you've only been here for two matches. Much like how you gave me credit where it was due only to say that it would not be enough to best you, the sentiment is noble... but sentiment alone isn't going to make a difference when it comes to the future of this company. I'm not going to stand here and tell you that TGW will perish if I do not become champion because I know that I am hardly the be all and end all of this company, but I think it is safe to say that the cameras would still work and the world would still turn if you lose at No Limits. If anything, I think that the future of this company depends on how much longer Miss Taylor is allowed to fill a position that she has long since not deserved to have… but that is neither here nor there and, while I will be vigilant, it ultimately has no bearing on our match whatsoever. Neither is your concern for my future; I think I can take care of myself, thank you kindly. If I wasn't able to, after all, then do you think for a single, solitary moment that I would be the one facing you for the TGW Championship? No, no I would not be since we both know Miss Taylor is desperately hunting for a way to quash my success, and has been for awhile. Even if she does not like me, she cannot deny my right to be here in this match... and after the bell has rang, Mister Rupp, then neither will you.The girl has a point there… one that she decides is a good segue-way into her final words for her opponent. That was, of course, assuming that he was not going to address her again.Ever since I have set foot in this company, I have defied the odds. From Mister Maddox to Mister Fireson, I have overcame each and every opponent that I have faced… and If anything, it is because of how you regard me so highly that I must come out victorious since if there's anything I truly hate, it's letting down the people that have supported me, no matter how indirectly. I'm going to make sure that everyone out there knows that you know what you're talking about. If that means pinning your shoulders to the canvas for that three-count, then so be it.. I know that you will bring everything to the table, much as I will, and I know that we will be able to shake hands and remain on good terms even after the bell has rang...A pause; the Southern Belle smiles, deciding to pull out an old fondness of hers that hasn't been used in far too long.…but don't be surprised when it is my waist that the championship calls home after No Limits.Everything fades to black as the Southern Belle nods in parting, her expression confident even in the face of the biggest challenge she has yet to face… a challenge that she will do everything in her power to overcome. Considering the amount of fight in the blond? Her chances are far better than many would like.
